    Grammy-winning British singer, Ed Sheeran has opened up on his experience with Nigerian singer and frequent collaborator, Burna Boy’s smoking escapade.

    Speaking in the latest episode of the Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend podcast, the ‘Shape Of You’ crooner recounted walking into the studio and getting confused by the air pollution of Burna Boy’s smoking.

    He said that was the most weed he has ever seen anyone ingest.

    Ed Sheeran said, “There’s an artist that I work quite a lot with called Burna Boy. I would say he is… That’s the most I’ve seen anyone ingest weed.

    “He came to the studio and I had a gig late on in the night. And it was very much chilled there [the studio], the door was closed. It was just smokes, smokes, smokes. And I remember walking in there to get a thing. It felt like I was not quite there [laughs].”

  • Reps Vow To Secure Singer Mohbad’s Compensation, Royalties

    Mohbad Was Never Arrested By NDLEA – Spokesman

    The House of Representatives has assured that it will ensure the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, receives proper compensation and royalties from his music work.

    Chairman of the House Committee on Justice, Hon. Olumide Osoba, made the commitment at an interactive session on the rights and royalties related to Mohbad’s music.

    This was in compliance with a motion of urgent public importance moved last week by Hon. Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos) to secure the royalties of Mohbad’s song.

    Osoba emphasised the need of securing compensation and royalties, acknowledging that the payments were essential sources of income for musicians.

    He said such will enable artists to sustain their careers, create new music, and build a future within the industry, adding that the current system often falls short in adequately protecting and providing for young musicians concerning their royalty rights.

    Osoba said many emerging artists face challenges when negotiating fair royalty agreements, particularly when dealing with major record labels, which often wield significant power and can impose unfavourable terms, resulting in artists receiving only a fraction of the royalties they deserve.

    He said: “It is crucial to recognise that young musicians are often not well-informed about their rights when entering into contracts.”

    The lawmaker said such knowledge gap places them at a disadvantage position, as they may not fully understand the complex legal intricacies surrounding royalty rights.

    He said the responsibility rests on society to bridge the knowledge gap and ensure that young musicians are aware of their rights while having access to legal support that safeguards their interests.

    According to him, to address these issues, it was vital to work towards implementing stronger regulations and support systems within the industry.

    This includes advocating for more transparent and standardised contracts for all artists, irrespective of their age or experience, to level the playing field and prevent the exploitation of young talent.

    “Additionally, there is a need to adapt the music industry to the digital age. While digital streaming platforms have revolutionized music consumption and distribution, young musicians often struggle to earn a substantial income due to outdated royalty structures.

    “Advocating for revised royalty models that accurately reflect the value of music in the streaming era is essential,” Osoba stated.

    He added that the committee was committed to this responsibility, adding that they have requested relevant information regarding the circumstances of Mohbad’s death and the measures in place to secure his royalties and other benefits.

    Famous singer Daniel Benson, aka Bnxn, said that his latest album, ‘Sincerely, Benson’, was inspired by the heartbreak he was suffering at the time.

    In an interview with Apple Music’s Africa Now Radio with Nandi Madida, he said, “I was in love when I was working on this project. I was heartbroken when I made this project because I had just left a relationship. I know that I was the one that caused it, but it’s like…how does one tell someone one is sorry if one cannot own up to it and accept it? That was one of the themes that inspired the project.”

    Bnxn also stated that he came up with the album’s title after a chat with fellow singer Burna Boy.

    “I went out with Burna Boy around the period I had just changed my name (from Buju to Bnxn). We were talking, and he told me I needed to personalise the name and make an emphasis on it. He added that it had to be the title of my album. He said, ‘It has to be part of your album itself. You need to sell it with you’.

    “He told me that and it stuck to me so bad, but it was crazy because months after that, he released his album titled, ‘Love, Damini’, which was his real name! That was one of the things that inspired the title; the need to personalise and make an emphasis on the name, so people can really identify me for what it is,” he said.

    The singer added that the album had a lot of emotional, it was also meant to make listeners feel good. He said, “This album encompasses so much emotion, especially if you can relate. Also in there is still a need for you to feel good, dance and vibe. That is why songs such as ‘Gwagwalada’, ‘Mukulu’ and ‘Right Energy’ are there. It gives you the sense that you are about to sink into a project full of emotions, but I also want you to feel good. I feel like this is such a perfect project; it has everything.”

    BREAKING: Naira Marley Now In Custody For Interrogation – Police Confirms

    The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday night announced that singer Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, is in its custody to assist in the ongoing investigation into the death of late Singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, also known as Mohbad.

    The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement, said, “Azeez Fashola, aka Naira Marley, has been taken into custody for interrogation and other investigation activities.”

    Earlier in a tweet on Tuesday night, Naira Marley announced his arrival in Lagos to assist in the ongoing probe while noting that he’d be meeting with the police.

    He said,

    “I’d like to share that I’ve just arrived back in Lagos, Nigeria, to assist the authorities with the ongoing investigation. It’s important I do my part for Imole.
    “I’ll be meeting with the police with hopes for the truth to be uncovered and for justice to prevail.”

    “For me, I’m living in the moment. There’s no end goal for me. I enjoy this now. If it goes well, good. But if it doesn’t, we try again. Love shouldn’t end with one person. I really don’t care about people’s opinions. What I care about is my feelings.”

    The music industry is a tough nut to crack, and many artists need the help of record labels to navigate.

    However, there have been a few instances in Nigeria of record labels fallout with artists due to contractual issues, artiste brand, etc.

    Here are seven musicians who have had issues with their labels:

    1. Wizkid:

    Before launching his Starboy label, Wizkid was under Banky W’s EME Records.

    He fell out with them because of the unfavorable split he was given on his contract, where he reportedly got 25% of his turnover.

    This was at a time when Wizkid was the major artist on the label and one of the biggest acts in the country.
    He asked for a review of the contract, but an agreement wasn’t reached, so he left. This later led to an online spat.

    2. Cynthia Morgan:

    Cynthia Morgan secured a recording contract with Jude Okoye’s Northside Entertainment Inc. 2013.

    After a few months, she released two chart-topping songs, “Don’t Break My Heart” and “Lead Me On,” which were well appreciated by fans; the latter was nominated for “Best Reggae/Dancehall Single” at The 2014 Headies.

    Cynthia went into seclusion after recording a few popular songs until 2020 when she resurfaced on social media and trended highly after saying that Jude Okoye, the owner of the record label Northside Entertainment, stole everything she owned away from her.

    The singer revealed this during an Instagram live session in which she lamented the loss of her name and Instagram account owing to a terrible deal.

    3. Kizz Daniel:

    Kizz Daniel, a Nigerian musician, burst onto the music scene in 2014 with his popular song “Woju”; he was signed to G-Worldwide Label then.

    Kizz Daniel had a falling out with his record label in 2017.

    The musician allegedly breached the conditions of his seven-year contract, which he signed in 2013.

    The deal was due to expire in 2020. However, Kizz Daniel opted to leave the label before it expired. Several constraints were imposed on the singer’s ability to cooperate with other artists.

    An injunction preventing him from performing over the holiday season of 2017 was issued as a result of the disagreement.

    4. Temmie Ovwasa:

    Singer Temmie Ovwasa has once again made some allegations against her former record label boss, Olamide, claiming that he ‘messed her mind up.’

    During a question and answer session via her Instagram handle, a fan asked the singer if she still keeps in touch with the YBNL boss.

    In response to the question, the young lady alleged that although Olamide gave her a platform, he rejected all the deals and showed she was offered. Ovwasa also alleged that her former boss stopped her from releasing songs.

    She claimed, “That man brought me to Lagos from Ilorin as an 18-year-old, put me on a platform, then proceeded to reject every show I got, every offer I got. Stopped me from releasing songs, kept me in his house with his wife (who spoke to me like I was garbage in front of her friends), and kid in the name of ‘family’. Put my face on the wall, on an album where the ‘men’ were allowed to be people.

    5. Runtown:

    In 2014, Runtown signed a record deal with Eric Many Entertainment, which Prince Okwudili Umenyiora, the millionaire CEO of Dilly Motors, controls.

    After a few hits, their relationship soured, and matters intensified when his label accused him of signing up for and attending events behind his firm’s back – a breach of contract.

    After determining the unfavorable situation, Runtown attempted to cancel his contract in May 2016.

    He claimed he never got compensation for live concerts, recorded royalty revenue (MTN Music Plus, caller ringback tracks), etc. The musician further claimed that the label threatened him with death.

    6. Brymo:

    Brymo and Chocolate City record label were at odds over allegations of contract violation.

    The singer left the record label in 2013, shortly after his debut album, Son of a Carpenter, was released. He further accused the firm of neglecting to promote the record and ignoring him.

    The record label then stated that the singer had violated a five-year contract that required him to release three albums between 2011 and 2016.

    7. May D:

    May D took to social media after leaving Square Records in 2012, claiming he lived under unbearable conditions while signed with the P Square brothers.

    He painted a grim picture of shared living quarters, using a television carton as a makeshift bed and covering himself with his shirt.

    Jude Okoye defended their stance, explaining that they signed artists to give back to society but encountered issues when May D wanted to become a part of Psquare, a brand that had taken years to build.
